This five-hour small group tour allows you to experience Khayelitsha, one of South Africa's largest townships, from the back of a bike. During the tour, learn about Velokhaya, a non-profit organization that promotes cycling to disadvantaged youth and maintains BMX and road cycling routes in the township. Lunch, snacks, and round-trip transport to Khayelitsha from downtown Cape Town are included.
After pickup from your Cape Town area hotel or guesthouse, the tour begins at 9am with an introduction and briefing and a half-hour drive to Khayelitsha Township on the eastern outskirts of Cape Town. With an estimated 1.5 million inhabitants, Khayelitsha is one of South Africa's largest townships and means 'New Home' in the Xhosa language. Begin your tour at the Velokhaya BMX Oval and Life Cycling Academy which provides children from this community with engaging after school activities.
After a quick introduction to the Velokhaya project and a chance to cycle their BMX track (if you dare), take to the roads with a local guide explaining the culture and customs of the community. Meander past local shebeens (pubs) and butcheries grilling meat along the street, with the opportunity to sample local delicacies such as sheep's head and home brewed beer.
Stop at Lookout Hill and climb to the top of this panoramic viewpoint. Then visit an informal settlement comprised of tin shack dwellings, where you can meet members of the community and play with the children. Make your way past the train station, local shopping center, spaza shops (informal convenience stores selling groceries), home-styled hairdressers, and many more exhilarating sights and sounds. Finally circle your way back towards the Velokhaya BMX Oval where you will enjoy a delicious lunch platter and refreshments before returning to your accommodations in Cape Town around 2pm.
